MasterCraft Sneak Peak – New X30

MasterCraft recently pulled the cover off the all new 2012 X30, a highly kept secret to be released for the boat show season. AWS will be receiving one of the first X-30s in time for the Grand Rapids Boat Show and the Spring Boating Expo in Novi. Until then, you can get a sneak peak of the new boat from team rider Zane Schwenk with the videos below. Zane states it’s the best surf wake in the MasterCraft line, and proves it by doing a little cold weather surfing down at the factory to show off the new boat!

GoPro Hero2 Has Arrived

GoPro recently released the HD HERO2 camera, the first upgrade of the HERO HD after almost 2 years of market place dominance. The new camera is pretty remarkable sporting a sharper glass lens, multiple LED lights, Mini HDMI port, 11MP image sensor, and featuring better low light performance. It seams GoPro thought of everything including an integrated battery warmer to enable longer battery life even in cold temperatures! 2012 X-Star Interview With Zane Schwenk

The new 2012 X-Star won’t arrive until spring, so we caught up with Zane to ask a couple questions about the revolutionary new boat!

How long has the 4th Generation X-Star been under wraps and how many prototype boats did you guys get on the water?

ZS- The 4th Generation X-Star has over 2 years of development between engineering, testing, building, and prototyping. 2 different prototypes were built for testing and a lot of time was spent moving the engine around to provide as much seating room as possible while still maintaining the signature X-Star wake.

It’s pretty well known the new boat is pushing a bigger wake! How would you describe it compared to the previous X-Star?

ZS- As the X-Star has continued to evolve, so has the sport in general. When we look back to the 2001 X-Star, there was an emphasis on cutting as hard as possible going big out into the flats. The 3rd generation X-Star had a perfect ramp for that. As the sport continued to evolve with tricks like 1080s, and wake-to-wake double flips, we need a wake shape with a little more punch off the top of the wake. This wake is all around bigger, but it has that extra lip at the top of the wake that makes the difference. Comparatively, the stock wake on the new boat is larger as well. The Wake is so big that I’ve broken 3 decks while prototyping! And after 7 knee surgeries, I don’t typically break boards any more. (laughs) When you look back at the sport each generation of the X-Star has propelled our sport forward, its going to be exciting to see where this boat takes us.

Besides the wake, what is your favorite feature on the new boat?

ZS- The 4th Generation X-Star is very user friendly. With all the action going on behind the boat we put an emphasis on rear facing seats. There are multiple seats in the boat that can be adjusted to face backwards for passengers to comfortably watch the action. That and the new touch screen dash systems are extremely easy to use. Anyone can sit down and figure out how to operate the boat’s ballast, stereo, and cruise control systems.

At 24 feet this boat is 2’ longer than the previous X-Star, how does it handle compared to the 22 foot boat?

ZS- The boat handles really well! At one point we tried pulling Rusty the biggest triple ups we could just to see what was possible with the boat. Rusty was hitting these massive triple ups and the lake was a mess! The boat was driving through the waves and turning extremely well.

Another first in the new X-Star is the 7.4L Ilmor power plant. How does it compare to the old 8.1 or 6L engines of the past?

Travis Moye’s been doing most of the testing with the new 7.4L in his XStar. He’s the official driver of the Pro Wakeboard Tour and runs The Boarding School, a popular wakeboarding school here in Florida. Travis has around 200 hours logged on his boat with new 7.4L and he’s loving it. The new Ilmor engine can push a heavy loaded boat so much easier and efficiently that Travis is getting a 30% reduction in fuel usage.
